Metric vs Imperial on Construction Drawings
Construction documents may show millimeters for details, meters for grids, and feet-inches for older US sheets. Mixing systems without a clear base unit causes field errors. This guide focuses on converting linear dimensions and area callouts so that a wall marked 3658 mm is the same wall someone else calls 12′-0″.
Pick a project base unit
Teams usually choose millimeters (common in metric architectural practice) or feet-inches (US customary). Convert every annotated dimension into that base before summing lengths or checking clearances.
Example: a corridor width of 1.5 m is 1500 mm, or 1.5 / 0.3048 ≈ 4.921 ft ≈ 4′-11″. Round for drafting presentation only after the check, not before.
Area and volume scale differently
If a room is 12 ft by 10 ft, the area is 120 ft². Converting each side to meters (3.6576 m × 3.048 m) yields about 11.15 m². You must square the length factor: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², so 120 × 0.09290304 ≈ 11.15 m². Applying 0.3048 directly to 120 is wrong.
The same rule applies to concrete volumes (ft³ vs m³): cube the length factor.
Tolerance and surveying notes
Survey feet and international feet differ slightly. For typical building interiors the difference is negligible; for long site boundaries it can matter. Follow the surveyor’s stated foot definition when plans reference recorded plats.
When dual dimensions appear on one sheet, treat one system as authoritative and the other as convenience text unless the title block says both are binding.
